Spiders eat astronomical amounts of insects on a global scale.
Do you remember that rule about 6 legs and 8 legs? A spider is not an insect, it is an arachnid. A class that also includes scorpions and ticks amongst others. Zoologists at the University of Basel and Lund University in Sweden have estimated that the world spider population can devour an estimated 400-800 million tons of prey each year, of which the majority are insects. As a comparison, the human world population consumes around 400 million tons of fish and meat each year. This underlines the importance of spiders in maintaining the ecological balance in nature. Here is the Nordics spring is coming and the spiders are waking up. Every other day I see a black spot somewhere on my newly painted white walls. With the use of a glass I catch the spider and let it out. They were welcome to spend the winter with us and can now start a new life in my garden.
